Why Wear the Mask?

Why Wear the Mask?

What is a mask but a second skin?
Keep my fragile heart from chilling wind.

Why flaunt my broken bones, gristle and blood?
When I could savor the sweet wounds in the dark.

Some like to seduce me to take off the mask,
They say they are curious about the sharp teeth.

They sound so innocent like the Red Riding Hood,
But they are not brave enough to meet the Big Bad Wolf.

Tell me again why I should risk,
Expose my soft belly because you said "Please".

A poem inspired by Paul Laurence Dunbar
