The King's Falcon(Part Two)

A falcon is an image of that part of you that belongs to the
king. Once there was a blind

Falcon who fell in with owls in a wilderness. They thought
he wanted to take over the ruin

they were living in, They tore his feathers. "Wait! I
have no interest in this

place. My home is the forearm of the king." The owls
thought this was some kind

of bragging trick to distract them. "No! I don't claim
to be like the king. I am

a ragged, blind falcon, All I can do is listen for
the king's drum and

fly to the sound when I hear it. I am not of
the king's species or genus,

but I have taken in some of the king's light, the way
air is swept up into a fire,

the way water becomes plant. My ego has died into
the king's being. I roll in

the dust at the feet of his horse. Don't let this
blind falcon form fool you.

I am really a delicious dessert that you should taste
now, you owls, before

I hear the drum again, because then I'll be gone."

The King's Falcon (Part One)

The King had a noble falcon who wander away one day,
and into the tent of an

old woman, who was making dumpling stew for her children.
"Who's been taking care

of you?" she asked, quickly tying the falcon's foot. She
clipped his wings and cut

his fierce talons and fed him straw. "Someone who doesn't
know how to treat falcons,"

She answered herself, "but your mother knows!" Friend,
this kind of talk is a prison.

Don't listen. The king spent all day looking for his
falcon, and came at sunset to

that tent and saw his fine raptor standing on a shelf in
the smoky steam of the old

woman's cooking. "You left me for this?" The falcon
rubbed his wings against

the king's hand, feeling wordlessly what was almost lost.
The falcon is like one who,

through grace, gets to sit close to the king, and so thinks
he's on the same level as

the king. Then he turns his head for a moment and he's in
the old woman's tent. Don't

feel special in the king's presence. Be mannerly and
thankful and very humble.

Prayer to be Changed

You changed one piece of ground to gold. Another you shape
into Adam, Your work

transforms essence and reveals the soul. My work is
forgetfulness and making

mistakes. Change those to wisdom! I am all anger. Turn
that to loving patience. You

that lift the bitter earth into dough and baked bread to human energy, you

that appoint a distracted man guide, a lost man prophet,
you that arrange random

patches in an elegant design, we've changed from our first
condition a hundred thousand

times, with each unfolding better than the last, let our
heart's eye see this: all

change coming from the changer. Ignore intermediaries! As
they diminish, delight increases.

When we meet the mystic go-betweens that are helping us,
bewilderment dissolves. But

it's that confusion that takes us deeper into presence!
Successive lives grow from

successive deaths. Help us stay in that succession, the way
In. Don't let us love

one life form so much that we stop there like a rat in a granary.
Mineral to vegetable to animal

to this walking human being whose footprints on the beach lead
into the ocean, gone! Muhammad said,

"Three kinds of people are particularly pathetic: the powerful
man who is out of power, the

rich man with no money, and the learned man laughed at." Yet
These are those who badly want

change! Some dogs sit satisfied in their kennels. But someone
who last year drank ecstatic

union, the pre-eternity agreement, who this year has a hangover
from bad desire wine, the way

he cries out for the majesty he's lost, give me his longing!

In the Waves and Underneath

In the Waves and Underneath

A man is wandering the market place at noon
with a candle in his hand, totally ecstatic.

"Hey," calls a shopkeeper, "is this a joke?" Who are you
looking for?" Someone breathing

Huu, the divine breathe." "Well, there are plenty to choose
from." "But I want one who

Can be in anger and desire and still a true human being in
the same moment." "A rare thing!

But maybe you're searching among the branches for what appears
only in the roots." There's

a river that turns these millstones. Human will is an
illusion. Those who are proud

of deciding and carrying out decisions are the rawest of
the raw! Watch

the thought-kettles boiling, then look down at the fire.
God said to Job, "You

value your patience well. Consider now that I gave you that
patience. "Don't be absorbed

with the waterwheel's motion. Turn your head and gaze
at the river. You say, "But

I'm looking there already." There are several signs in eyes
that see all the way to

the ocean. Bewilderment is one. Those who study foam and
flotsam near the edge

Have purposes, and they'll explain them at length! Those who
look out to sea becomes the sea,

and they can't speak about that. On the beach there's
desire-singing and rage-ranting,

the elaborate language-dance of personality, but in the waves
and underneath there's no

volition, no hypocrisy, just love forming and unfolding.

Naming Love Too Early

NAMING LOVE TOO EARLY

Most of our heartbreak comes from attempting to name who or what we love and the way we love, too early in the vulnerable journey of discovery. We can never know in the beginning, in giving ourselves to a person, to a work, to a marriage or to a cause, exactly what kind of love we are involved with. When we demand a certain specific kind of reciprocation before the revelation has flowered completely we find our selves disappointed and bereaved and in that grief may miss the particular form of love that is actually possible but that did not meet our initial and too specific expectations. Feeling bereft we take our identity as one who is disappointed in love, our almost proud disappointment preventing us from seeing the lack of reciprocation from the person or the situation as simply a difficult invitation into a deeper and as yet unrecognizable form of affection. The act of loving itself, always becomes a path of humble apprenticeship, not only in following its difficult way and discovering its different forms of humility and beautiful abasement but strangely, through its fierce introduction to its many astonishing and different forms, where we are asked continually and against our will, to give in so many different ways, without knowing exactly, or in what way, when or how, the mysterious gift will be returned. - David Whyte

近乎驕傲的失望讓我們看不到愛的邀請;

Fringe

Fringe

You wreck my shop and my house and now my heart, but
how can I run from what

gives me life? I'm weary of personal worrying, in love
with the art  of madness!

Tear open my shame and show the mystery. How much longer
do I have to fret with

self-restraint and fear? Friends, this is how it is:
we are fringe sewn inside

the lining if a robe. Soon we'll be loosened, the binding
threads torn out. The beloved

is a lion. We're the lame deer in his paws. Consider what
choices we have! Acquiesce

when the Friend says, Come into me. Let me show my face.
You saw it once in preexistence,

now you want to be quickened and quickened again. We
have been secretly fed

from beyond space and time. That's why we look for
something more than this.

- Rumi

生命是一隻獅子;

The City of Saba

The City of Saba

There is a glut of wealth in the city of Saba. Everyone
has more than enough. Even

the bath stokers wear gold belts. Huge grape clusters hang
down every street and

brush the faces of the citizens. No one has to do
anything. You can balance

the basket on your head and walk through an orchard, and it
will fill itself with

overripe fruit dropping into it. Stray dogs stray dogs stray in
lanes full of thrown-out

scrapes with barely a notice. The lean desert wolf gets
Indigestion from the rich

food. Everyone is fat and satiated with all the
extra. There are no

robbers. There is no energy for crime, or for gratitude,
and no one wonders about

the unseen world. The people of Saba feel bored with
just the mention of prophecy.

They have no desire of any kind. Maybe some idle curiosity
about miracles, but that's

it. This overrichness is a disease. Those
who have it are blind

to what's wrong and deaf to anyone who points it out.
The city of Saba cannot be

understood from within itself! But there is a cure, an
individual medicine, not

a social remedy: sit quietly, and listen for a voice
within that will say, Be

more silent. As that happens, your soul starts to revive.
Give up talking and

your position of power. Give up the excessive money.
Turn toward teachers and

prophets who don't live in Saba. They can help you
grow sweet again and fragrant

and wild and fresh and thankful for any small event.

A Prayer

In your light,
I learn how to love.

In your beauty,
how to make poems.

You dance inside my
chest where no one sees you.

But, sometimes I do, and that sight
becomes this ART.

The Music We Are

The Music We Are

Did you hear that winter's over? The Basil
and the carnation cannot control their

laughter. The nightingale, back from his
wandering, has been made singing master

over the birds.bThe trees reach out their
congratulations. The soul goes dancing

through the king's doorway.Anemones blush
because the have seen the rose naked.

Spring, the only fair judge, walks in the courtroom,
and several December thieves steal

away. Last year's miracles will soon be
forgotten. New creatures whirl in from non-

existence, galaxies scattered around their
feet. Have you met them? Do you hear

the bud of Jesus crooning in the cradle? A single
narcissus flower has been pointed Inspector

of Kingdoms. A feast is set. Listen: the wind
is pouring wine! Love used to hide

inside images: no more! The orchard hangs
out it's lanterns. The dead come stumbling by

In shrouds. Nothing can stay bound or be
imprisoned. You say, "End this poem here,

and wait for what's next." I will. Poems
are rough notations for the music we are.

- Rumi

Soul, Heart and Body One Morning

Soul, Heart, and Body One Morning

There's a morning when presence comes
over your soul. You sing like a rooster

In your earth-colored shape. Your heart
hears and, no longer frantic, begins

to dance. At that moment, soul reaches
total emptiness. Your heart becomes Mary,

miraculously pregnant, and body like a
two-day-old Jesus says wisdom words. Now

the heart, which is the source of your
loving, turns to universal light, and the

body picks up the tempo and elegance of
it's motion. Where Shams*-I Tabriz walks

the footprints becomes notations of music
and holes you fall through into space.

The Thief

The Thief

A man hears footsteps in his house during the night.
He reaches for a flint to spark and make light.

But the thief comes and sits behind him.
Whenever the tinder starts to catch, the thief snuffs it.

The man thinks it's dying by itself. "It must be moist."

Sometimes we do not see what extinguishes our light,
our love.

Something in the dark does it. You may as well say that
day flares and goes out and night

comes on with nothing moving in those changes. Whatever
happens or doesn't, a presence is helping.

- Rumi

Drawn by Soup

Drawn by Soup

I try to imagine the most sumptuous
meal: Burgraves Khan, general of the

armies east of here, has an autumn
night banquet celebrating himself!

The archangel Gabriel arrives as
Abraham's guest, fatted calf roasting.

Then the perfect setting, unimaginary:
your voice at dawn and the fragrance

of soup. I follow the simmering that
pulls me into a light-filled kitchen.

I ask the cook for a taste. "This is
not for human beings." Please. You

Strike my head with a skimming spoon,
mind drops away: true hospitality.

A Star with No Name

A Star with No Name

When a baby is taken from the wet nurse,
it easily forgets her and starts eating solid food.

Seeds feed on ground awhile, then lift up into
the sun. So you should taste

filtered light and work toward what has no
personal covering.

That's how you came here, like a star with no name.

Move in the night sky with those anonymous lights.

Not Intrigued with Evening

What the material world values does
not shine the same in the truth of

the soul. You have been interested i
in your shadow. Look instead directly

at the sun. What can we know by just
watching the time-and-space shapes of

each other? Someone half awake in the night sees imaginary dangers; the

morning star rises; the horizon grows
defined; people become friends in a

moving caravan. Night birds may think
daybreak a kind of darkness, because

that's all they know. It's a fortunate
bird who's not intrigued with evening,

who flies in the sun we call Shams.

What was told the cypress that made it strong

Chewing a piece of sugarcane,

In love with the one to whom every that belongs.

The Danger of Getting Public Attention

The Danger of Getting Public Attention

Whatever comes here, goes away. East and West themselves
dissolve. How could either culture

give what you need? Don't feel honored. Feel cautious,
careful, and alert. Public attention

Is a poisoned wine that delights for a moment;
then your head drops over. Eminence burns

like oil fire, hard to control. Your truth comes when you're
flat on the ground, so keep

your head down. Get off the ladder! You are not in some
co-partnership with God! That's not

how it is. I cannot explain. Understanding begins in the
mirror of devotional work. If I

told all of what I know, many could not stand it, so I'll
refrain. I shout twice

at the edge of a village, the leave. Whoever is supposed to
hear will hear.

- Rumi, from The Masnavi, Book IV

Begin 開始

Begin

This is Now. Now is. Don't
postpone till then. Spend

the spark of iron on stone.
Sit at the head of the table;

dip your spoon in the bowl.
Seat yourself next your joy

and have your awakened soul
pour wine. Branches in the

spring wind, easy dance of
jasmine and cypress. Cloth

for green robes has been cut
from pure absence. You're

the tailor, settled among his
shop goods, quietly sewing.

- Rumi
